I do get your sentiment. I am in full agreement that there is anti-Black racism within certain Latino spaces; however, the focus on language alone as an excluding factor falls into the very ideas of anti-Black racism. I would say this, though: there are Black folks all over the world and in America that speak Spanish, there are Afro-Latinos that speak Spanish, Black folks from the Caribbean that speak Spanish and there is a large segment of the USA population that speaks Spanish, so the premise of using language as a deciding factor of what language is used at the Super Bowl is quite frankly no substantial.

Secondly, let's also remember that the very ideals of anti-Black racism are baked into English, which is from the Imperial logics of the monarchy of England; maybe there is value in destabilizing this idea that English is the one and only language that needs to be spoken on one of the largest musical stages. As per your own analysis, historical hierarchies employ the use of English to perpetuate ongoing forms of racism.

You used a Spanish word in this article, would you suppose then that by using a Spanish word you are excluding people from reading this article? I would say "no." All languages are valid and need to be celebrated. Let's not forget that for people of African descent across the world, some have lost their traditional languages because they were forced to speak English.

Finally, I am not against your argument about anti-Black racism, I am saying let's not fall into the colonial practices that blind us from focusing on the many forms of White supremacy.

I’m sorry this take is so so bad. Even as a Black American myself, just because something does not center us that does not mean it is harmful for us or anti-Black American. I didn’t watch the performance cuz ion fuck with the NFL but to hate on the performance because it didn’t cater to Black Americans shows how much you have adopted our oppressors’ ideology. And whole time Bad Bunny was showing love to ALLL of the Americas including Afro-Latinos, Americans, and Canadians!

There are Latinos who are “Blacks”

RRStrickland BIPOC ✍🏽 Writer's avatar

All Latinos ARE BLACK that’s why the racism they have against us is IDIOTIC. They literally are last on the totem pole as far as the Aryan Nation is concerned and will ALWAYS BE. We should ban together and stop 🛑 this nonsense! I’ve said it for years!

I think you’ve never been to Latin America, there are many white Latinos, brown Latinos, black Latinos, indigenous Latinos. Saying that all Latinos are black is simply wrong and deletes a HUGE amount of people from Latin America SPECIALLY indigenous people that have been here before all other ethnicities “””””””discovered”””””” or arrived to America.

RRStrickland BIPOC ✍🏽 Writer's avatar

So don’t assume I’ve never been to Latin America, hell my last gf was from El Salvador 🇸🇻. Brown is Black to racist white folks they put us all in the same damned bag and guess what? They’re right. What we need to do is start ACTING like the brothers and sisters we are, instead of like enemies.

RRStrickland BIPOC ✍🏽 Writer's avatar

You’re missing the point: to the Aryan nation and the real racists? All Spanish people are BLACK. I’m not talking about the color: hell, all black people are different colors the exact same way.

you assume because I’m brown I don’t have lighter and darker relatives? My grandmother looked like one of the Golden Girls; but she was STILL BLACK.

Brown is Black. Black is Brown, you ever heard of the “one drop rule?” Look it up. This is my grandmother and just like some Spanish people she was light skinned…does that make her non-black?

I just think you don’t know about Latinos in general.

You are practically accepting and normalising the logic of the oppressor and how they divided people to control, the world is not black and white, not everyone who is not white is suddenly black because ’they are/were also oppressed by the white,’ you having a darker or lighter family members doesn’t excuse or allow you to group people as you please.

RRStrickland BIPOC ✍🏽 Writer's avatar

Just because you don’t like it or aren’t willing to accept it doesn’t make it false. You are in denial because when your parents signed that birth certificate and you applied for college they asked your RACE FOR A REASON. STOP 🛑 BEING NAIVE.

Ayisa's avatar

You seem to be proving that American education stereotype, go and force blackness on people that are not black 🙄

RRStrickland BIPOC ✍🏽 Writer's avatar

I don’t make the rules lady. I didn’t “group” shit. Get out your feelings because THE WORLD IS BLACK AND WHITE.

“blacks”? You lost me right there but also you can be black and Latinx???

I got up left and went to sleep on the whole Super Bowl, salute on the article!

This is a dumb take. A Spanish language performance is not anti-Black, and acting like it is just exposes how little you understand about how culture works. Nobody owes you English to validate your existence.

You don’t get to suddenly care about anti-Blackness in Latino communities only when Latinos are the ones under attack. That’s not solidarity, that’s using Black struggle as a weapon to police other marginalized people’s visibility. Also, we are still fighting for black culture to translate itself to be legitimate, so why are you demanding that from someone else?

Framing this as a competition for attention is exactly the kind of zero-sum thinking that keeps communities divided while the actual systems harming both groups stay untouched.

If you want to talk about anti-Blackness, do it consistently. Don’t drag it out only when you’re uncomfortable seeing another culture take up space. Wtf

knew this article would be wild with blacks in the title

Chile lol “blacks” made me recoil like when a man starts a sentence with “females”…nothing sound ever follows

Right? Made me question if they’re black to begin with

Black or white, people from the global north – almost always Americans – always have to make everything about them. Like, I'm sorry Bad Bunny decided to celebrate LATIN AMERICA for once. And God forbid he sings in his native language

smythie's avatar

Although you brought up valid points, I do agree with many of the commenters in regard to the performance not necessarily being a “slap in the face” due to not being in English. I’m not with you on that but they do tend to have a “crabs in a barrel” mentality at times (unfortunately).

Estou rindo disso em pt br, devido ao micão querida KKKKKKKKKKK

She might think this is a threat just because it’s not in English kkkkkk

I enjoyed the show, but I'm still staying inside my house 🏡 if you catch my drift…

this is the prime example of what we mean when we say black americans are still privileged for the simple fact that they're north american.

i'm not denying colorism is a problem in latin american culture, but both you and i know that the halftime show had all type of latinos, white, mixed, indigenous and black. you're showing that some black americans, just like white supremacist, can't even hear spanish without feeling threatened, and it's a shame.

RRStrickland BIPOC ✍🏽 Writer's avatar

All I’m focused on is the colorism, because it’s definitely an issue. Latin communities have discriminated against my people for CENTURIES, now all of a sudden everyone forgot that?!
