Teamster organizer threatens end of Gavin Newsom's political career over autonomous vehicle law

On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, a caravan of Teamster truck drivers arrived at the California State Capitol to demand that Governor Newsom sign AB 316 into law.
AB 316 is a bipartisan bill that would require a human operator in all autonomous vehicles (AVs) weighing over 10,000 pounds.
The proponents of AB316 are primarily concerned with the safety of autonomous vehicles. They argue that autonomous vehicles are not yet safe enough to operate on public roads without a human safety operator present in the vehicle.
They point to the number of accidents involving autonomous vehicles in recent years, including some that have resulted in fatalities. They also argue that autonomous vehicles are vulnerable to hacking and other cyberattacks, which could pose a serious safety hazard.
The Teamsters are hoping that their caravan to Sacramento will put pressure on Governor Newsom to sign AB316. They are also hoping to raise public awareness about the issue of autonomous vehicle safety.
If Gov. Newsom vetoes this bill, he is putting the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of truck drivers at risk, while jeopardizing public safety," said Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien.
AB316 has passed both houses of the state legislature with strong bipartisan support. However, Governor Newsom has not yet indicated whether he will sign it into law.
